Curriculum

Experience the charm and grace of ballet and dance. A program such as this benefits ALL ages in the development of coordination, grace, stamina, and self confidence. Ballet strengthens the entire body and substantially increases flexibility in movement. Other physical benefits include muscle tone development in the legs, abdomen, arms, back and hips. Ballet improves posture.

Children, especially, develop strong muscle tone during their developmental years. Ballet also offers a combined experience of building commitment, discipline and artistic expression.

Adults gain poise, relieves stress and adds grace to their movements.

Express your artistic nature and find the inner peace it brings

BALLET TECHNIQUE

Ms. Nicholson uses a syllabus she developed after years of serious study and experience. The syllabus is based on elements of the Italian, Russian and French schools. Students are placed in a class according to their technique level. She stresses correct body alignment, ballet technique, and performing qualities.

CONTEMPORARY DANCE

There are many different styles of contemporary dance today. Some of the pionees are Hanya Holm, Martha Graham, Ted Shawn, and Doris Humphrey. Each developed a unique style; however, a good foundation in basic contemporary technique prepared the dance to change more easily from one style to another.

CREATIVE MOVEMENT

Creative Movement encourages the child to discover various ways a body can move. The earliest preparation for the systematic study of ballet begins with our classes for three and four year olds. The children are introduced to concepts of basic movement and music. Exercises for strengthening and co-ordination are offered in a nurturing atmosphere so that the children gradually learn the discipline required in a ballet studio. Creativity can inspire the imagination and challenge the child. Creative movement is incorporated into the Ballet Technique class.

POINTE

After several years of ballet training during which time the body can reach sufficient technical and physical maturity, pointe shoes may be worn.

Attempting pointe work too early may over-develop muscles and lead to injury.

Ballet technique is the same in pointe shoes as in ballet slippers.

MUSICAL STAGE DANCE

This class is designed to introduce the child to pantomime movement and portrayal of the character in the ballet stories. The students will learn stage dancing in different musicals using Jazz and Tap movements. This class is an addition to the Ballet Technique Class.

PRE-BALLET

A class for the 5 year olds to introduce some Ballet Technique, creative movement and rhythm coordination with music. The classes work to develop the attention span, participation, self-discipline, proper conduct in class, as well as body consciousness through exercises aimed at good posture and the stretching and flexing of muscles without stress. Goals are to awaken interest, enthusiasm, good attitude, self-awareness, and response to rhythmic and musical patterns.
This beginning class prepares the children for the Ballet Technique I Class.

Students progress through each level of the school at their own pace based on both artistic merit and physical maturity.

All students will be placed in a class level that is appropriate for their technique levels. Students will be evaluated during the first week of class to assure proper class placement, and again at midterm.

To assure correct placement, new students with prior experience will be interviewed and/or auditioned.
